We little knew that day
God would call your name.
In life we loved you dearly.
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you
but you didn’t go alone,
for a part of us went with you
the day God called you home.
We’re left with loving memories
of the time we had with you,
and feel your love around us
in everything we do.
Our family chain is broken
and our lives are not the same,
But as God calls us one by one
the chain will link again.
This is a beautiful poem I chose to have read at my husband robert’s funeral in April, 2016
My uncle just passed away, and you poem was read at his service today. I is perfect.
My husband died on June 3,2015 at 6:07pm , . I think of him every minute of every day. This song was sung at a marriage retreat we went to only months before he passed. We were married for 47 years, and I never thought that I would be the one left behind. I miss him so much
Hi Chelsey. You say “This song was sung…” I’m not sure what you mean. Broken Chain is a poem, not a song. (Unless someone made it into a song, which I’m not aware of.)
Sorry for your loss. My wife and I just celebrated our 55the wedding anniversary and I can’t imagine my life without her.

Hello my family wants to use your poem for my grandmother service but I am having trouble with your first line when I read it We little knew just don’t sound quite right can you explain please
“We Little Knew” is a pretty common phrase. (Google it) It is like saying, “We weren’t expecting”. That poem was written over 50 years ago and you’re the first who has stated confusion with that line.
My Father just passed away 2 days ago. July 27th 2016. A father of 9 and 18 grandchildren along with 6 great grand children. This will be read at his funeral tomorrow and I appreciate the sentimental words. It touched my heart.
Thanks Ron Tranmer!
Thank you all for your kind comments. It pleases me that this poem brings comfort to others.

My brother passed away Wednesday and when I got home I got on Facebook to pass some time. A distant friend in Florida had just posted this poem. Denny was the first of the ten siblings to pass after a long battle with Dementia.
Today October 31, 2016 I Will read this at his funeral.
Thank You
this beautiful poem was read out at my dear husbands funeral
A dear friend posted this poem for another of our friends who just passed away on January 5, 2017. This poem has now brought peace for so many. I am currently enrolled in a Class – Spirituality , Character, & Service and we have a final project to present in our last class. I have decided that my main focal part will be this poem. Thank you Allison. Two other poems I’ve written which have become quite popular are titled, “The Dash Between”, and “Heaven’s Light”. Check them out…

My sister read your poem at my fathers funeral 15th February 2017, being the first of our close family and our guiding light to pass on Broken Chain sums up how we are feeling at the moment. Thank you so much for your poetry when we struggle to find the words.

This poem is very beautiful and comforting. It was read at my brother’s memorial service on January 28, 2017.
This poem really touched my heart and a few tears came down when I read it. I want to read it at our family reunion banquet ( memorial part). July 8,2017.Thank you so much for sharing.
My special sister passed away Sunday, 23rd July 2017. Your poem is going to be read at her funeral on the 8th August. The words are perfect. X
I will be reading this poem at my grandson’s funeral today. Rowan was only 3 months old and we are devestated as you can imagine. I hope this poem brings us all some comfort. Thank you Ron Tranmer for writing such a beautiful poem.
Is it ok to post your poem on Facebook to express on behalf of the loss of my niece? She passed away after a battle with cancer. Comes from a very large family and circle of friends and I’d like to express my feelings and make others aware of her passing. The family has given me their permission to post. Thank you!
Yes you may. Keep my name as author with it please.
I would like to share your Broken Chain (revised) poem on the memorial card for a funeral of my loved one. I will be sure to credit you for the work of given permission to use it.
At our church, we often print poems in our worship aid booklet for funerals. It is only prepared for the funeral attendees free of charge. A family has requested that we include “The Broken Chain” in their booklet. May we have permission to reprint? Thank you.
Yes you may. Thank you for asking.
